Drogheda Port–able Warehouse

Port Warehouse

Collinson have successfully supplied and erected a BestHall Tension Membrane building for Martin Butterly Ltd at their Drogheda Port site, to increase on-quay storage, improve efficiency and reduce logistical problems.

The Drogheda site is equipped to handle a wide range of cargoes – from fertiliser to steel and timber.

Martin Butterly Ltd – Drogheda stevedores since 1885 - currently imports 350,000 tonnes of steel and timber per year, mainly from Scandinavia, Russia and Latvia.

Cargoes are held at secure stores on quay and at a warehouse complex off quay. From here timber and steel is transported to timber and steel suppliers throughout Ireland as required.

However, storage remote from the quay was causing some significant logistics issues, so the decision was made to increase the facilities available at the berth.

A Collinson Besthall building was chosen for two main reasons: firstly the favourable price, and secondly the re-locatable design of the structure.

Land at the Drogheda site is leased from the Drogheda Port Company, which has major expansion plans underway.  By opting for the Besthall building, Martin Butterly Ltd retains the option to move as the site is developed.

The new building is 100m by 22m by 7m wall height, giving 2200m² of covered storage, which can accommodate up to 10,000 tonnes steel.

Erection was completed in less than 5 weeks, by Collinson’s 5 man team, onto a ready prepared asphalt base.

The steel framework is covered by heavy duty polyester fabric, coated on both sides with flame retardant PVC, treated with acrylic lacquer, a white roof is supplied as standard to allow natural daylight, with Martin Butterly Ltd selecting blue walls from a varied choice of colour options.

Two sliding doors 8m x 6.5m give access to plant and vehicles, and there are 3 personnel doors 1m x 2.1m.

Ventilation is provided by 3 mechanical roof ventilators, each with a capacity of 8300m³ per hour.

Tom O’Reilly, owner and joint MD of Martin Butterly Ltd, is “absolutely delighted” with the new warehouse, saying that the project was completed at “minimum inconvenience”.
